TIP 3012

TOPIC: Windows 3.1x vs. Windows 95

It's a fact that Windows 3.1x has nowhere near the memory management capabilities of Windows 95. All Windows 3.1x users have experienced this lack of efficiency when our computers "hang" or "crash". Although these disasters seem to happen for no apparent reason, they are often the result of opening and closing programs without periodically exiting Windows 3.1x and restarting your computer. Even if only one program is open at any given time, the mere opening and closing of a program can wreak havoc on memory in Windows 3.1x.

Windows 95, while not a perfect operating system, is much better at managing memory than its predecessor. As such, we highly recommend that you upgrade to Windows 95. Upgrading will reduce the likelihood of random computer crashes related to memory issues, and provide a safer environment for your precious data! Of course, not every computer is equipped to run Windows 95, but hardware upgrades today are very inexpensive compared to the headaches associated with trying recover or replace lost data.

Remember that running Windows 95 does NOT mean you should stop making backups!

DataBasix has compiled its own list of minimum requirements that you can use as a guideline to ensure that your computer is equipped to run Windows 95 efficiently.

  • 486DX 33Mhz or faster
  • 8Mb RAM minimum, 16Mb recommended
  • 540Mb Hard Drive, the more the merrier
  • VGA Display Adapter w/1Mb Video Memory

Once you upgrade to Windows 95, remember to upgrade your printer and video drivers, if possible, to optimize performance in these areas. Updated drivers can be obtained from your printer and video display manufacturers.

Happy Computing from the folks at DataBasix Technologies!
